Fear Factory has FINALLY returned to form

Every single Fear Factory fan, at least the older ones anyway, have been waiting for this album since Obsolete. It is that good! I knew when I pre-ordered this album that this was going to be far superior to The Industrialist and Mechanized albums. Both of those efforts felt kind of flat and monotonous in delivery and didn’t have much to offer; a few good riffs here and that but nothing that warranted climbing to the rooftops and cranking the volume. This album on the other hand makes me want to do that. Out all the new albums I’ve heard in the last few months, I’ve listened to this one the most. This album reminds me a lot of Obsolete in feeling, perhaps because it resembles the story-telling Burton C Bell writes for this or the way his melodic vocal range hits those notes, either way out of the five metal albums purchased, I like this one the most. This is the Fear Factory that should have been, this is the Fear Factory he fans want, the catchy, jump up and down, sing-along industrial metal that they had with Obsolete and Demanufacture the two albums that define what Fear Factory is. Say what you will about Archetype it was a decent album, but albums after that have been lackluster. Genexus will reel you in and yell at you and say, “we’re back! Where have you been!?!” I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s a ”come back” album by any means but I definitely say that Fear Factory has FINALLY returned to form from 1998, which was the height of their career.

I could write about every track on this album, but honestly, the best ones by far are “Autonomous Combat System,” “Anodized,” “Dialectric,” “Soul Hacker,” and “Expiration Date.” These songs easily could have been on Obsolete, the guitar riff for “Soul Hacker” isn’t all that different from “Edgecrusher” or dare I say it, “What Will Become” from their Digimortal album.

I would highly recommend you buying this album after reading this short review. All year, I kept thinking that Moonspell’s new album was the album of the year, but it’s clear, it’s this one. Go buy it…now!

9.5/10
