INDUSTRY IS NOT INTERESTED IN THE ART OR THE ARTIST

Speaking  about  the new album "Darker Designs and Images", lyrics, comparisons with the previous cd, creation of the songs, cover art, promotion and tour,  videoclips, bands/projects outside Siebenbürgen, guest musicians, music industry , and....the  Game of the Tower!

Richard! Tell us a few things about the creation of the latest Siebenbürgen album.

It was hell from the start and it got even worse as time progressed. It took us 2 years to even want to do it and when we finally had written all the material for it and went to our label and said “We’re ready, lend us the money to go into the studio” they dragged it out another six months. During that time we had to fire our lead guitarist just as we got the go-ahead from the label. That forced us to take out all of the material he had a part in and even writing 3-4 completely new songs. It was hectic but we managed to do it.

What has been the press’ reaction to your latest effort?

Most of the press that I’ve seen has rated it as our best one to date with the exception the Swedish press of course. They seem to hate us for some reason. But I’d rather have a rating of 1 of 10 instead of 5 of 10 if I had a choice hehe.

What do the lyrics of the album deal with?

Demon kings and vampire queens, nightmares, blood, sex and other dark tales as your usual Siebenbürgen album ;) They are a bit more harsh and aggressive than usual and most of the “thee” and “thy” things are gone. The concept that the album is built around is an ancient myth about this demon and his summoning unto an unsuspecting world. This story will most probably continue on our next album.

How would you compare "Darker Designs and Images" with your previous album?

We only put one limitation on ourselves before we recorded this album and that was that it should sound and feel new, but still have the spirit of the old Siebenbürgen. I think we managed to do that very well. The album feels fresh and new but at the same time it could have been released 10 years ago. It is probably the most “even” album we’ve done so far and there is an underlying theme to the it, a concept of sorts, but all the songs are strong enough to live on their own.

How is a Siebenbürgen song created? Do you write the material all together?

Sometimes we do but most of the stuff we write at home. We meet up and play it to everyone and if we like it we put it on the album. Most of the tracks for “Darker Designs and Images” were not finished until we recorded them in the studio. There were always some last minute changes to be done, the only song that made it through without any change was “Rebellion”.

The cover of the album is really good, who came up with the concept and who designed it?

I just happened to come across it when I browsed the internet. It was made by a guy called Stephan Stölting. I asked him if we could use it as a cover for our album and he agreed and sold it to us. That cover was not our first choice though and if you knew how much bullsh*t we had to wade through before the “industry” was satisfied you would be amazed….But the finished cover looks damn sweet and it really fits the music as well so we are very happy with it.

Will you promote the new album with a tour?

We are checking things with a booking agency as we speak. It is hard to get dates where it is possible for all the six of us to get together though so we might have to do a couple of shorter ones instead of one long. We’re also talking about some festivals including Wacken so expect to see some live Siebenbürgen soon one way or the other.

Do you have any plans to shot a video clip?

Yeah we have some loose plans to get one or two clips done. Marcus and me will probably do something ourselves, we like to be in total creative control hehe. If it goes well we will release it to our fans as a download most likely. We had some wild plans when we did “Plagued be thy Angel” but our label wouldn’t pay for it so we had to toss it because we couldn’t finance it ourselves.

Do you have any other bands/projects outside Siebenbürgen and if not would you be interested in doing something?

No I don’t have anything outside of Siebenbürgen at the moment, it takes up most of my free time, but I recently found some really old recordings that I made back in the mid 90’s that I will probably record again and do something with soon I hope. I’m always up for trying new things if it sparks my interest and everything feels good.

Are there any other artists which you would like to have as guests in a future Siebenbürgen release?

Well; Jeff Loomis, Tony Iommi, Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, King Diamond, James Hetfield, the list is endless, but seriously I can’t see it happen. We will probably have to settle with some local ones hehe.

What aspect of being involved in music do you hate the most?

That would have to be without a doubt at all; dealing with the “industry”. They are not interested in the art or the artist, all they care about is how much money they can make from your work and they will almost stop at nothing to get it.

Last question is sort of a game. There is a Tower and on top of it we have 3 bands and you have to push down 2 of them and let the best one on the Tower. The 3 bands are: Cradle Of Filth, Dimmu Borgir and Rotting Christ. Which bands will you push down and which one will you leave on the Tower?

I can only do this based on their music because I don’t know any of them personally. Since I never really heard anything from Rotting Christ (that I can remember) I guess I’d have to push them off first, sorry Greece hehe. The second one is a bit harder but I must make it: Dimmu Borgir. I never really liked the last two albums they made. So the winner would be Cradle, I like their work and I always have even though I find “Damnation and a Day” a rather bleak effort I think they repaired it with “Nymphetamine”.

Thanks very much for the interview Richard, have a nice day!

Thank you Dimitris! Stay metal!
