 Wonderfully recorded.

I remember reviewing Kayser’s first album Kayserhof in 2005 then again in 2006,
since then, I’ve heard nothing. I just kind of assumed the band broke up or had something better to do. From what memory tells me, Kayser wasn’t a bad band, so I jumped at the chance to review their latest effort.

I will have to say that I’ve been quite disappointed lately in what metal has been offering up. A lot of it sounds tired and old, trying variants of the same tricks bands like Machine Head, Megadeth, Fear Factory, and Emperor came up with 15 years ago. In other words, I was just hoping to God I wouldn’t hear something that I just described.

“Bark and Bow” and “Bring Out the Clown” sound like they really want my attention. They’re fast, heavy and sound like they actually give a shit. The first track had some natural sounding introduction before the distortion and slow drums come in. At first, it sound like any other metal band I’ve heard before that’s why I think the song could have been better had they just began it at 45 seconds. Then the song gets very punchy, the snare sounds like a machine gun and the chorus and the post chorus sound very thrashy with classic thrash sounding vocals that any metal head could relate to. The lyrics sound simple and slower and nothing too complicated, but it doesn’t have to be, it’s metal. “Bring Out the Clown,” is a lot faster. The snare back beat isn’t as fast as lets say death-metal playing blast beats or anything, but it’s at a pace that can definitely get a crowd in a mosh worthy mood. The guitars are as fast as any classic thrash band reminiscent of the Bay area. The solo is just blistering fast, part of me thinks that the solo was done just for the sake of speed, none-the-less two fantastic tracks.

If any of the songs had the opportunity to make it to radio it would “I’ll Deny You.” The chorus is catchy, the guitar rhythm isn’t too fast, if anything, I would say that it reminds me of what’s on the radio now. Although, as much I like the singing and the sound, it’s the only thing that’s keeping the band from making it to radio. I’m not disrespecting Spice by any means by saying so. As for a song with mass appeal, this track fits the bill.

I’m not sure I would have placed “Dreams Ben Clockwise” after that track. It’s difficult to listen to. It’s tenacious and when I try to follow it they change it up when I have figured it out. In other words, it doesn’t flow as well as the previous tracks. It’s an okay track I suppose. The chorus was wonderfully orchestrated but the main rhythm to this song makes me dizzy. Around the 1:45 mark, they confuse the hell out of me by changing into something completely different. It’s as if, they stopped the recording, and added in this piece of acoustic guitars and melodic singing before going back to the song.

The rest of the album sounds much like the tracks I’ve mentioned above. That’s it’s saving grace is that the whole album is consistent. I could see this band go on tour with the likes of Down and Corrosion of Conformity. They are an old enough sounding band where they would appeal to metal heads aged 28-28 but nothing younger. The CD is wonderfully recorded, the mix was great, the production was most good with the exception of what I mentioned above. Might be worth a listen to.

7/10
