The
new Macbeth era has begun…This album revels a band grown and wise,
that has found into Classic Gothic tunes his dimension.
It’s no easy to be agreeable playing this hackneyed style, but this
new album made them follow in Lacuna Coil’s footsteps and it sounds
good and will be surely appreciated from the fans.
Most
of you will (after a first listening) surely say that this album tries
to recover early Lacuna Coil and Theatre Of Tragedy atmosphere; Even the
sound traces that style, but we can’t but admit that if you look over
this, these songs are absolutely agreeable.
I really appreciate their new course, and the way they dug out again
this mood;
Most of Old Gothic bands turned their style into Alternative Nu Metal (
such as Lacuna Coil) or into a more Symphonic style (see Within
Temptation) , but Macbeth seems to not take care about the actual
musical trend; they are doing what they feel and this is great for me.
The production is not so majestic, it sounds as if this album was
produced in 2004/2005, but it’s not a big problem!
Let’s start listening the opener “Scent Of Winter” in which Morena
and Andreas immediately shows their good vocal approach to the
atmosphere of the song.
The second track gets the power of pure gothic metal and it shows a
mature band who’s able to give importance to the mood in a very
perfect way; the vocal duet and the work made by rhythmic session,
supported by a great guitar and an amazing keyboard !
I really like the magical “Last night in Shanghai” who reminds me of
Lacuna Coil (In a Reverie era).A great gothic atmosphere in which you
can’t but notice and appreciate a well-finished work for what concern
arrangements.
There’s space also for the absolutely Modern Gothic Metal “Little Spark”
who puts in evidence a great refrain sung with an exceptional growl by
Andreas.
Another great shot is “Dogma” in which I can’t but notice how they
become so “fluent” dealing with classic gothic atmosphere! I really
like the great refrain in which you notice the great duet between Morena
and Andreas; he still confirm to have a great growl, but also good clean
ones; Morena gets also a very original and agreeable timbre who
perfectly fits into Gothic tunes .
“Void Of Light” and “Opaque” are a dive into Theatre of
Tragedy(1997-2000) style; another two fair songs in which the vocals
seems to not miss the target; the band is able to create good songs,
reminding to those legendary bands but without being an imitation.
Another good song is the last of the album “The Archetype” that is
the perfect example of Gothic Metal ten years ago, well made and here
proposed again in a great way…a song that still found the perfect
groove.
What can I add more? I like the arrangements and the keyboard sound; I
really hope they will count on a better production that nowadays is
essential in order to make the difference, but besides it, I can affirm
that this is a more than ever good album.
