Metallica
did an extraterrestrial outstandin` performance.
The
Sonisphere festival returns to city of Basel after three years of
abscence. Such a great event is always good to offer a great spectacle
to the Metal community in the Basel area. With headliner Metallica
returns a Metal legend to Basel after 21 years of live absistence. As
support acts performed the Seattle Grunge Rockers Alice
in Chains, Airbourne from
Australia and Kvelertak from
Norway.
The
doors opened on 3 PM and Kvelertak
performed as first band on 5 PM. The Norwegians performed at Rote Fabrik
venue in Zurich before. Well,
I haven’t taken any notice of them and was excited about their show.
Although it was early, many spectators stood in front of the stage and
watched them. The music was okay but not enough to convince and Kvelertak finished their performance after 35 minutes.
The
Australians Airbourne was the
next band on 6 PM. The theme song of „Terminator 2“ movie attracted
the attention of the spectators, who applauded loudly when they entered
the stage. The Kick Ass Rock’N’Roll drove the spectators crazy and
scored much better than Kvelertak.
Guitarist and mainman Joel O’Keefe got in touch with the audience at
the Golden Circle area to share handshakes. The Australians performed
very well. No wonder, their party music provided a great atmosphere and
the nice weather was a plus too. Unfortunately the show ended after 45
minutes and Airbourne kicked
ass and gained new fans.
Alice
in Chains
could perform on 7:15 PM. I
saw them last time at the Sonisphere Festival in Jonschwil in the mud
fight four years ago. Now I was lookin‘ forward to their performance
tonight. The classic track „Them Bones“ from the legendary
„Dirt“ album marked the beginning of the show. Although they
performed very well, the sound from the speakers was everythin‘ else
than enjoyable. The mixer screwed it.
The
vocals from the speakers sounded like croakin‘ particularly when
singer William DuVall started singin‘ high notes. Besides that guitar
and the bass was too much in the foreground and the singin‘ drowned.
An undefined sound mush dominated, which I and the spectators didn’t
like at all. Alice
in Chains
said goodbye to the audience after 55 minutes. They did a great
performance, but the sound just sucked.
Then
you had to wait until 8:55 PM. Afterwards ran a Clint Eastwood western
with the song „Ecstasy of Gold“ by Enio Morricone on the screen and
the fans cheered in order to welcomin‘ singer James Hetfield,
guitarist Kirk Hammett, bassist Robert Trujillo and drummer Lars Ulrich
in the St. Jakobs Park venue. The
fans could choose the song on the play list by buyin‘ a ticket on the
internet in advance. Tonight you could vote for a song under the slogan
„Metallica by Request“. You could choose between A for „Wherever I
May Roam“, B for „Orion“ or C for „Fuel. You were part of the
voting when you sent a SMS for 80 Swiss Centimes to the number 4636. Some
fans stood on small areas together with Metallica
on stage and enjoyed the show. „Battery“ became the first song and
the sound was amazin‘ compared to Alice
in Chains before. The audience liked it pretty much and provided
moshpits and a nice atmosphere. The audience went wild and sung loudly
„Obey Your Master“ at „Master of Puppets“. Singer James Hetfield
appreciates it very much and pushes the spectators - when Kirk Hammett
played his guitar solo, no eye remained dry. The fans on stage were
allowed to leave their small areas during „Creeping Death“ and
rocked out with Metallica.
The new track „Lords of Summer“ got played after fan Natalie had the
honor to announce it. It didn’t sound too bad and is a foretaste of
the upcomin‘ album. Meanwhile it was dark and the sky was covered with
clouds. Suddenly it started windin‘ while „One“ got played and
rain, flashes and thunder became a part. It seems like Petrus is a Metal
head. However this break in the weather provided a particular
atmosphere. The following Laser show of Metallica was amazin‘ and was
rewarded with much applause.
The
time had come to reveal the song of „Metallica by Request“
competition. „Orion“ won the competition in the end. Metallica
left the stage for a moment and the spectators became loud. Its efforts
paid off by „Seek’N’Destroy“, a classic par excellence and
finished a 115 minutes performance. Metallica
did an extraterrestrial outstandin’ performance and made 40'000
spectators happy.

my point for this show:
Metallica
are a live kick ass band and you’ve to recognise that. However I think
the „Metallica by Request“ competition for the tracks
„Wherever I May Roam“, „Orion“ and „Fuel“ hasn’t
succeeded. Gettin‘ pushed steadily to vote for the songs by SMS just
bugged. Sorry
guys, but that’s only a rip-off in my opinion. Anythin’
else was great.
A
great opportunity for the US Bands to celebrate the US Independence Day
tonight.

Metallica
hatten einen ausserirdischen geilen Auftritt hingelegt.
Nach
dreijähriger Abwesenheit kehrt das Sonisphere Festival in die Stadt
Basel zurück. So eine grosse Veranstaltung ist immer gut um der Metal
Gemeinschaft in der Region Basel ein tolles Spektakel zu bieten. Mit
dem Headliner Metallica
kehrt zudem eine Metal Legende nach 21 Jahren Live Abstinenz nach
Basel zurück. Als Vorbands traten die Seattle Grunger Alice
in Chains, die Australier Airbourne
und die Norweger Kvelertak auf.
Nachdem
die Türen um 15 Uhr geöffnet hatten, durften Kvelertak
als erste Band um 17 Uhr auftreten. Die Norweger spielten zuvor in der
Roten Fabrik in Zürich. Bisher hatte ich noch keine Notiz von ihnen
genommen und war neugierig auf ihre Darbietung. Obwohl es noch früh
war, standen zahlreiche Zuschauer vor der Bühne und schauten sich an
was die Norweger zelebrierten. Die Musik war ganz nett, aber für mehr
reichte es nicht und nach 35 Minuten beendeten Kvelertak
ihren Auftritt.
Um
18 Uhr waren die Australier Airbourne dran. Das Intro vom Filmklassiker „Terminator 2“
weckte die Aufmerksamkeit der Zuschauer, die lautstark applaudierten
als sie die Bühne betraten. Der Kick Ass Rock’N’Roll liess die
Menge jubeln und kam beim Publikum besser an als Kvelertak.
Gitarrist und Frontmann Joel O’Keefle ging ins Publikum beim Golden
Circle um Handshakes zu verteilen. Die Australier zeigten eine starke
Leistung. Kein Wunder, denn ihre partytaugliche Mucke sorgte für eine
tolle Stimmung und das schöne Wetter war ein weiterer Pluspunkt.
Leider war nach 45 Minuten Schluss, aber Airbourne
konnten heute Abend überzeugen und neue Fans dazugewinnen.
Alice
in Chains
durfte um 19:15 Uhr loslegen. Das letzte Mal sah ich sie vor vier
Jahren beim ersten Sonisphere Festival in der Schlammschlacht von
Jonschwil. Nun war ich gespannt wie ein Flitzebogen auf ihre
Darbietung am heutigen Abend. Mit dem Klassiker „Them Bones“ vom
legendären „Dirt“ album aus dem Jahre 1992 eröffneten die
Seattle Grunge Götter ihre Show. Obwohl sie eine starke Leistung
zeigten, war der Sound aus den Lautsprechern alles andere als
angenehm. Hier hatte der Mischer Scheiss gebaut.
Vor
allem als Sänger William DuVall zu hohen Töne ansetzte, kam nur Gekrächze
aus den Lautsprechern. Sonst waren zwischendurch die Gitarre und der
Bass zu sehr im Vordergrund und der Gesang ging unter. Es herrschte
ein schrecklicher Brei, der mir und anderen Zuschauern gar nicht
gefiel. Nach 55 Minuten Spielzeit verabschiedeten sich Alice in Chains vom Publikum. Sie legten einen tollen Auftritt hin,
aber der Sound war einfach nur beschissen.
Bis
um 20:55 Uhr war Warten angesagt. Dann lief ein Clint Eastwood Western
auf den Bildschirmen mit dem Song „Ecstasy of Gold“ von Enio
Morricone und die Fans jubelten um Sänger James Hetfield, Gitarrist
Kirk Hammett, Bassist Robert Trujillo und Schlagzeuger Lars Ulrich im
St. Jakobs Park willkommen zu heissen. Im Vorfeld konnten die Fans per
Ticketkauf im Internet die Setliste für die Tour bestimmen. Am
heutigen Abend gab es unter dem Motto „Metallica by Request“ die Möglichkeit
per SMS ein Lied zu bestimmen. Man konnte wählen zwischen A für
„Wherever I May Roam“, B für „Orion“ oder C für „Fuel“.
Mit 80 Schweizer Rappen an die Nummer 4636 war man beim Voting dabei.
Einige Fans durften auf kleinen Flächen stehen und mit Metallica auf der Bühne stehen und das Konzert geniessen.
„Battery“ eröffnete die Show und im Gegensatz zur Vorgruppe Alice in Chains war der Sound richtig geil. Das gefiel der Menge und
sorgte für Moshpits und tolle Stimmung. Das Publikum geht ab und
singt bei „Master of Puppets“ lautstark „Obey your master“
mit. Sänger James Hetfield gefällt das sehr und peitscht die
Zuschauer an und bei Gitarrist Kirk Hammetts Solo blieb kein Auge
trocken. Beim Lied „Creeping Death“ durften die Fans ihre durch
orange Linien markierten Flächen verlassen und mit Metallica abrocken. Dann folgte mit „Lords of Summer“ das neuste
Lied, welches Fan Natalie per Mikrofon ankündigen durfte. Klang gar
nicht mal so schlecht und ist ein Vorgeschmack auf das kommende Album.
Mittlerweile war es dunkel und der Himmel von Wolken bedeckt. Als
„One“ gespielt wurde, fing es plötzlich an zu Winden und ehe man
sich versah, gesellten sich Regen, Blitz und Donner dazu. Anscheinend
ist Petrus ein Metalfan. Jedenfalls sorgte dieser Wetterumschwung für
eine spezielle Atmosphäre. Die darauffolgende Lasershow von Metallica
war der Hammer und wurde mit viel Applaus bedacht.
Dann
wurde es Zeit für die Lied Auflösung bei der Aktion „Metallica by
Request“. Das Rennen machte eindeutig „Orion“. Metallica
verliessen für einen Moment die Bühne und die Zuschauer meldeten
sich lautstark zu Wort. Ihre Bemühungen zahlten sich aus und mit
„Seek’N’Destroy“ folgte ein Kracher der ersten Stunde und
beendete einen sensationellen 115 minütigen Auftritt. Metallica hatten einen ausserirdisch geilen Auftritt hingelegt und
machten 40‘000 Zuschauer glücklich.

Fazit:
Metallica sind live eine
Granate, das muss man einfach anerkennen. Jedoch fand ich die Aktion
„Metallica by Request“ für die Lieder „Wherever I May Roam“,
„Orion“ und „Fuel“ nicht gelungen. Die ständige Anstachelung
von James Hetfield & Co. auf den Bildschirmen Die Lieder per SMS
zu bestimmen, nervte irgendwann nur noch. Sorry Jungs, aber meiner
Meinung nach ist das reine Abzocke. Sonst war alles super!
Eine
tolle Gelegenheit für die US Bands am heutigen Abend den
amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitstag zu feiern.
