Go watch it twice! “…and Hulk, Smash!” said Captain America as he’s leading the team of Avengers to save New York City from a marauding hoard of aliens from the other side of the galaxy. At first glance, the cynical viewer of movies might say, “this is just another action movie,” and they would be partially right and they might also say, “the people from Hollywood are just using characters that have been around since the 60’s and making money off of them,” yes, that’s correct too, but it’s still fun to watch! I thought the script for this movie was great, it’s clear that there are five protagonists which are hard to write equally for without one of the characters weighing down the attention of the movie. Had the movie been written where “Iron Man” had the majority of the lines, it might as well be another Iron Man sequel, or Captain America, or Hulk, ect. Luckily for us that wasn’t the case. The antagonist wasn’t exactly clear, true, the main focus was on Loki, Thor’s brother, but one could tell there’s another person that was behind him pulling the strings, which only spells out “sequel.” The action scenes were fantastic. The best ones involved the Hulk. The first one is where Thor and Hulk are fighting and Thor just bashes Hulk in the face with his hammer and Hulk just takes it! The whole theater just gasped when that scene flashed. And the other great scene was where Loki and Hulk were in a room together towards the end of the movie and Loki is talking shit to Hulk that he was weak and he was truly nothing compared to him, then Hulk took him by the feat, and basically bashed Loki into the floor, walls, and ceiling like a scene from a cartoon. Everyone was laughing after that because it was just fantastic. Iron Man was Iron Man, smart-alec and has the goods to back it up. Thor was something out of fantasy land it seemed like, I hadn’t seen the original movie where he’s in it, but he seems like a cool cat, Dr. Banner (Hulk) was shy, nervous, didn’t really want to engage in a lengthy conversation, Black Widow seems to have a whole other agenda throughout the movie, Hawkeye didn’t really come into play until the last part of the movie to give an opinion, and my favourite, Captain America, the character’s first appearance since his movie came out, **spoiler alert** don’t read forward unless you’ve seen the Captain America movie. We (the audience) have no idea what has happened since Captain A woke up in 2011. As far as we know, he’s still in a facility trying to get reacclimated with society apparently, there are reports that there was 30 minutes of the movie that were cut out that involved this aspect, can’t wait until the blu-ray comes out. Throughout the movie, Captain America and Iron Man take jabs at each other because the two characters are very different, where Captain America is selfless and Ironman is selfish. In the end, Captain A influences Ironman for the better. Believe it or not, there is a storyline. It isn’t like “G.I. Joe” or “Transformers” there it’s non-stop action all of the time and no substance. The Avengers blends in conspiracy, character development, deception, and….wait for it…a plot! The plot revolves around an energy source that was introduced during the Captain America movie and was stolen from a secret government facility by Loki, Thor’s brother, for the sole purpose of bringing an Army over from the other side of the universe to take over the planet. What came out was a fantastic story with fantastic characters, effects and acting. Bottom line: Go watch it. Go watch it twice! If all possible, watch Thor and Captain America before watching the Avengers, it might help to watch them for storyline purposes.
