SOULFLY

Many years have passed
since Max Cavalera last played in Greece with Sepultura,but all fans
were again present to see him with his latest group Soulfly.Although the
gig was not sold out,the club was very crowded consisting of two kind of
fans : a)the true metal fans who came to see the ex-singer/guitar player
of Sepultura b)the nu metal fans who came to hear mainly Soulfly tunes.
The concert
started with a local band from Thessaloniki called Psycho Choke.With
their well played and ‘angry’ hardcore they won the crowd’s
attention within a few minutes and made our waiting for Soulfly
easier.Psycho Choke were very good and we all had great fun.
After a
small delay,lights went out and the drumer got his position behind his
drum kit and started playing a drum intro which lead to … Downstroy
and suddenly all fans started moshing!! All band members appeared on
stage and last came Max.With no intro or talking to the crowd ,Seek and
Strike started at once and by the end of the song Max greeted us.Next in
the list was amazing Jump Da Fuck Up but unfortunately the song was not
played in it’s entirely but as a medley starting somewhere from the
middle part of Jump Da .. Wasting Away,a Nailbomb tune was next and the
show went on with Head Up,L.O.T.M. and slowly we reached one of the
highlights of the night ,a medley between Arise/Dead Embryonic
Cells.There’s no need to describe the crowd’s reaction to this
song,everyone was headbanging crazy and after this powerful moment the
band tried to rest us for a while with Fire and Umbabarauma in which Max
came with out with a strange traditional Brazilian instrument and
started a drum solo.At the end of Max’s solo all the band joined him
and all memebrs had sometkind of a drum to hit!It was nice break from
the show because the very next song was Refuse/Resist followed from
Territory and if this was not enough to make us all go crazy the band
played a medley between Inner Self and Call To Arms! After so many good
old songs it was time to be reminded that the concert was from Soulfly
and not Sepultura and 4 Elements and Back to Primitive were played with
great energy,songs that satisfied everyone in the venue.The biggest
surprise of the night was without doubt the cover version of Territorial
Pissings of Nirvana!!The encore of the night was of course another
Sepultura song … Eye For An Eye and in this way the concert came to an
end leaving people moshing and heads on fire from the nonstoping
headbanging.Another cool surprise of the encore was when Max came on
stage wearing a shirt from Greece’s national soccer team.
In a few
words,Soulfly’s appearance was like a dynamite,the band was in
excellent shape and very well prepared.The rest of the members didn’t
seem to confront any difficulties playing Sepultura songs and Max was
simply a great performer.It was from that gigs where you know from the
beginning that you can’t be dissapointed. |
