INTRO

Well, everybody is lucky sometimes. Now, there’s my turn. I won tickets for the Soulfly-Gig in Zürich. Now I’m here in the Volkshaus in good old Zürich, and there’s already the first bad surprise: I have to hand over my spikes and also my jeans-jacket at the entrance because of the danger. Hell, this is a Metal-concert, not a kindergarten-party! Let’s hope the first band is better than that.

P.M.T.

I never heard a word of P.M.T. from Lausanne, and it also doesn’t sound really Metal. Then I remark that there is a construction for a DJ on the stage, please, no Nu Metal…

What comes is the worst band I have ever seen live. 08/15-Nu “Metal”, with wanna-be evil-posing, deep guitars, scratches (how can somebody destroy vinyl?!) and a singer,  - once he sings in a megaphone  - who has a sinewy, squeaking voice, and the sound on the stage is also not very good. After two and a half song, I leave the hall, something I never did before, but M.T.P. show me in every detail of their music why I hate Nu “Metal” that much. ça va, Zürich?” Not at all. Brrrrr, is this bad…

Fortunately, M.T.P. leave the stage after half an hour. Puuh, who’s coming now?

ANNULATION

Annulation.  They are better than M.T.P. A lot better. Yeah, that’s Metal. 4/5 of the band has long hair, and their sound is absolutely that what I need now: Old school Thrash/ Death Metal, very bangy and catchy. There are also some modern influences, but most if the time, Annulation riff straight forward. Singer Domi changes his voices between shouting and high screaming, the sound is fat and there’s also a moshpit in front of the stage. Great, that makes fun! The people enjoy the gig and Annulation (I think they are from Zürich) get very warm applause and a lot of cheering. All musicians act very professional, always moving and banging, motivating the crowd, who supports the band with “Hey! Hey! Hey!”-shouts. I can’t tell you a lot more, because after the disaster with the first band, I’m now banging almost all the time – like a lot other people too. But I remind some songs of Annulation: One is called “Fuck All” (yeah!!), another “Burning Time” and I think they also played “No Masterhood”, but I’m not sure. Anyway, it was a very good gig and I think Annulation got some new fans this evening.

SOULFLY

And then, after a break of about twenty minutes, Soulfy enter the stage with the Intro of “The Prophecy”. I’m sure I’m not the only one who gets a goose-skin when mister Max Cavalera himself enters the stage. This guy has an unbelievable charisma. And then the song starts. Frome one second to another, the whole Volkshaus is jumping and moshing. I was standing in about the 5th row, but suddenly, I’m at the mixing console. Max doesn’t make any announces, Soulfly pas straight to the next song, “Seek’n’Strike”. Yeah, sing along, baby! The new guitarist wears a rucksack, which looks a bit stupid, but this doesn’t matter at all, the whole band (most of all the drummer) play tight like nothing, and of course Max is very pleased of the jumping, excited crowd. He changes his shirt about five times this evening, first a Brazilian one, then a Hellhammer-shirt (I scream “Hellhammer!!” and some people look at me, like I would be mad…), once a blue one and then one in the camouflage-style. Soulfy have an insane, a fantastic lightshow, every songs is perfectly underlined, the fans are banging and shouting without an end. Then, the magic moment: “Roots, bloody roots”. That’s why I came this evening. In this moment, I forgot about the stupid first support-act, I just enjoy Soulfly, or better Sepultura. It looks funny when Max bangs his head with his matted dreadlocks. He smiles, looks at the fans, and the show goes on. Another highlight is the song called “Mars”, with an acoustic part and Spanish sounding Flamenco-guitars, played on a guitar with two necks. Fantastic. Also great are “Born Again, Anarchist”, “Jumpdafuckup” (everyone joined the call!) and also “I Believe”, where Max raises his hand to the crowd. This is Tribal Thrash Metal par excellence! Then Max, the bassman, the guitar player and I think it was the drummer of Annulation, all take kind of a drum and together with the drummer they perform a percussion-song, not too long, but very impressive. In general, Soulfly have lots of oriental elements in their sound. Once, there’s a guest-shouter on stage, but I don’t know him and I also don’t understand the name, but a friend told me that he sung the part of Fred Durst (Soulfly made a Duet with him, no idea why…). In contrary to the last tour, Soulfly play quite ling, and of course, after the last song "Primitive" (Killer!!) they come back for an extra song: “Eye for an eye for an eye foe an eye”! Once again banging, screaming, celebrating, Max says “Thank you”, leaves the stage and the other musicians finish the song instrumentally. Great! A band, which is not really conform, but in their way, they’re perfect. Thank you for this, Soulfly!
