In Sorrow's Requiem
After almost a decade of silence, Motus Tenebrae return from the shadows with "In Sorrow’s Requiem" - an album that feels less like a comeback and more like a ritual reopening. Released through My Kingdom Music, it marks a new chapter for one of Italy’s most enduring gothic doom realities — a chapter steeped in decadence, emotional gravity, and a sense of twilight that only they know how to conjure.
From the very first notes, it becomes clear that Motus Tenebrae have distilled their essence. Refined it. Darkened it. A decade of silence has not dimmed them. It has sharpened them.
What emerges is a work that moves with the solemnity of a liturgy and the weight of a confession whispered at dusk.
Motus Tenebrae inhabit a very emotional geography, ritualistic, yet corporeal, rooted in the tragic, yet strangely comforting.
Tracks That Shape the Album
All songs show an atmosphere between ruin and radiance. The band’s identity remains unmistakable: gothic doom, but never suffocating; melodic melancholy, but never fragile. They navigate that delicate line between pathos and aggression with a confidence earned over twenty‑five years. The guitars alternate between crunching, muscular riffs and elegant, sorrow‑laden leads that carve space for reflection. The atmospheric touches — piano, violin‑like textures, suspended chords — open windows of light in the album’s architecture of shadows. And then there is the voice: mostly dark, clear, expressive, carrying echoes of Paradise Lost’s Nick Holmes.
Already from the first promo listening the song 'Pulvere Sacro' has fully kept me involved: this centrepiece of the album features a paced rhythmic section, in an almost midtempo. It is solemn, evocative, yet easy-going, capturing the band’s dual nature: the sacred and the profane.
'Endless Buildings', the opener, sets immediately the tone with its sense of sorrow and decay marked by an intro with piano and violin followed by a haunting carpet full of tormenting, strong melody. If you want to taste a challenging sadness that leaves you more resilient than before, this is the song you have to listen to.
'Solitude' showcases a varied vocal range, that lets you fall into a controlled despair.
'The Dark Machine': Here, the band’s heavier side takes the lead. A driving, shadow‑stained track where the rhythmic crunch becomes a heartbeat, pushing the listener deeper into the album’s darker chambers.
'Fragments' is a moment of resilient introspection, suspended and aching. It shows the band’s ability to react and to create a beautiful emotional stillness without losing tension — a rare skill in this genre.
'In Sorrow's Requiem' is a very beautiful and mighty song that grows from listening to listening, because the power in it reveals itself each time more.
'Love Damned Of Dead' is very atmospheric, vibrational; its fluid aura and angelic chorus, strings, hint of piano, a touch of enraged vocals bring you in a surreal realm.
'Shelter Me' is an impressive, intense track, also with harsh vocals, mourning notes kept long in the refrain, great bass lines. A track that could powerfully impact well if played live.
With 'End Begun', the album leaves us with the same infinite melancholy as it opened, and with a remarkable virtuosism in the instrumentation.
Conclusion
Motus Tenebrae surely carry the DNA of great gothic doom masters like Paradise Lost . But, in my opinion, "In Sorrow’s Requiem" is no imitation of any other album. It is a translation of haunting even Nordic influences into something unmistakably Italian: very emotional, steeped in a cultural sense of beauty and ruin. And truly, nothing is surprising about this. Italy is, in its bones, a gothic country — a land of cathedrals, shadows, decadence, and a natural instinct for melancholy. Motus Tenebrae simply give musical form to what the landscape already whispers. The only minor point is that they could have dared more: perhaps with explosive drums, additional growls and a more bombastic presence.
"In Sorrow’s Requiem" is a powerful return — an album that reaffirms Motus Tenebrae as one of the most authentic voices in European gothic doom. Without a doubt, in my opinion, is one of the best albums of the year. It is mature, emotional, beautifully constructed, and deeply rooted in that Italian sense of tragic beauty.

Official Biography: The dark Tuscan combo was born in Pisa in July 2001, under the will of bassist Andrea Das Cox and singer-guitarist Luis McFadden, historical members who are still part of the line-up. In April 2002 they released their first EP "Beyond". In 2005 they released their first full length "Wayside", the album attracted the attention of New LM Records, who offered the band an important contract. At the same time they began to compose material for the new album "Soul Expression" which was released in October 2007 with the entry of Anton Chaney on drums (Death SS, Rhumornero, Tossic). With the new album Motus Tenebrae deservedly earned the title of one of the best gothic doom metal bands in the Italian music scene. In 2009 the concept album "The Synthetic Bliss" was released. In 2012, Luis McFadden left the band and was replaced by Valerio Voliani (Diesanera) and on december Revalve Records released the album "Double Black". In 2014 the frontman Luis returned on a permanent basis and saw the entry of Andrea Falaschi (Deathless Legacy) behind the drums. In the meantime a new contract was signed with My Kingdom Music and on January 25, 2016 the album "Deathrising" was released. After a long break, the band is ready to share its stylistic and musical evolution, and the release of "In Sorrow's Requiem", a new long awaited album, is scheduled for May 8, 2026.
