Interview with Sulpher 2002
Sulpher live in Pratteln 2002
The Pilgrimage Tour 2003 - concert in Winterthur

WE ALL BECOME DELETED, SOONER OR LATER, SOMEWHERE, SOMEHOW

we want to show there are many different sides to Sulpher

Speaking  about comparisons between Deleted and  Spray, joyful and difficult moments while preparing the upcoming  Delete, , the meaning of the new title, fans,  guest musicians for Delete, winner or loser?, the Pilgrimage Tour with The Mission, projects for a tour,  America and targets, lyrics, the Pope - religion and the first satanist sailor onboard an English warship, and....the  Game of the Emptiness!

Dalia - Hi Rob!! How are you? Great news finally!! Monti, Mud and you are very deep into recording the follow up to Spray! The new album is taking shape. Is this a satisfaction for you all?

Rob- Satisfaction isn’t the word- it will be such a relief to finally finish  and get the record out –its been so long and we want to get back out on tour and play the old and new stuff live again. it seems like a lifetime

In a statement of yours, you tell that the new album will be a bit different from Spray: it will be more song oriented, with a certain musical change. Can you reveal something more for our readers? Will it be Industrial again, anyway…?

Were not the sort of band who wants to be labelled in any musical category- I hate labels ,its so confining-we knew the new record would be different from spray. when we started this band we wanted to be able to do musically whatever we wanted ,we wanted to be able to go off in any direction we felt at that moment in time – the new material is a more mature sound I think . weve all grown as individuals over the past few years-some life changing things have happened –weve been through a lot-and as we change so does the music we make. dont worry it will still have elements of ‘spray’we never ever want to lose the power ,energy and emotion that is in our music,we just need to expand ,we want to show there are many different sides to sulpher

Most difficult creative development of Delete? And, on the other hand, which were the most joyful and comforting moments?

I don’t know really ,well we all do other things and these things all take time away from our real passion, which is sulpher– I find this very frustrating – I personally love the interaction with an audience and the feedback you get  when you play your music live ,theres nothing that can describe this feeling-I miss this when we are in the studio-it will be such a release of energy when we finally get back out on tour –hearing the album take shape and sound great is obviously the joyful bit

Has the title Delete a particular meaning? Will it be released through Independent again, is it?

We all become deleted ,sooner or later ,somewhere , somehow

2002 Sulpher were seen as a great revelation in UK, Germany and in other European countries, ‘cause Spray was a completely new expression of Industrial. How much innovative will be Delete? Can you imagine which will be the reaction of fans and press?

You can never think to deeply about it – you can never pre-judge what fans or press are going to think of your music-we just make music we feel expresses what we are feeling, whats going on in our heads at that moment in time-it’s a bonus if people like it too.

By the way fans, I notice that Sulpher’s fans are very patient and maintain the same enthusiasm. I think you can be proud of them! Is there any message you’d like to tell them?

I know !! its amazing – all we can do is say thank you and apologise for being so slow, the wait will be worth it ,its on its way. we promise !

Guest musicians for Delete! If I understand well you got the cooperation of Gary Numannd Toni Halliday (ex ? Curve). In particular, Toni provides some additional vocals on the song “Losing Faith”. Can you tell us how happened it all? It would be very nice if you could also add some details concerning Losing Faith and other songs!!

We are working on the new gary numan album  alongside our own, maybe we will kidnap him and get him to put something on one of our tracks ! who knows ,we shall see .as far as toni halliday, well we hang out all the time, she is a dear friend ,she came over to the studio one afternoon   &we had a section that needed a cool vocal sample type thing,so we got toni to throw some stuff down,we used some of it in the  section I speak of and it fit perfectly and sounds great !

Ohh faith, now that I think about, I remember a quotation “If you think you can win, you can win”. Do you agree? Could it be suitable to Sulpher’s attitude?

I don’t know about winning ,ive always been a loser

Which are in retrospective your impressions about the successful tour with The Mission (Pilgrimage Tour 2003). Which kind of enrichment has left this experience to you and, in general, how much positive is, for Sulpher, your participation as live guitarist to other artists’ shows?

Playing with other artists is always a great experience, its also very flattering when  you get asked by people you respect musically, but sulpher is from the heart-it’s a totally different thing ,its our thing.myself and monti put this thing together from nothing and to see it grow  feels really special-sometimes it feels like its all we have ,it means everything

From the moment Sulpher are a formidable LIVE band, to attend a concert of yours is simply a must. Period! Ohh noooow, after the release of Delete, a tour will be planned, right??

A long tour with more than one date in Switzerland ;)) ;)), right?!! (Pleeeease!!!)

Thanks for that compliment-

Most definitely, touring as much as possible ! everywhere ! – ok 2 nights in Switzerland is that o.k ???

Monti told me, during the interview done in 2002, that America is an important target for Sulpher. Is it still so?

Yeah –but not only America – everywhere  is a target,we just want as many people as possible to be able to hear what we do and get involved if they want to

Speaking a bit about lyrics, certain expressions like “now you’re one of us” “you ruined everything”, “i’m so fucking scared of you, are you scared of me too?” “I don’t believe in god, he don’t believe in me” really remain piercing in the mind of those who got acquaintance with Sulpher’s songs, even becoming, somehow, a synonym for Sulpher self. Will the next album Delete provide other “piercing” and effective expressions like these?

Its cool that people feel a part of the lyrics and the music ,I like the fact they can get inside the song via the words and make their own meaning out of it .there will no doubt be a few piercing expressions on the new album.

Merchandise! Is there something new and original in sight??

We were going to get some stuff out early in the new year but the company in england was fucking around so we blew them out-we found a great merch company in germany who is run by some really cool people , so were talking with them on designs and stuff at the moment, were going to wait for the release of the album and the tour now –

Our ‘’ harder than a prison fuck ‘’ t-shirts sold out over and over again so I guess we should get those re printed up !along with the new stuff .

Few days ago the Pope John Paul II (nowadays even described as “Magnum”) died. As English citizen how do you feel this event? He was called “the conscience of the world”. Does the world need a conscience? According to Malachy’s prophecies, only 2 Popes are left. In general do you believe in prophecies? Nostradamus… for example?

I don’t like to talk about organised religion, its not a part of my life

Counterbalance! Counterbalance! ;) This is an excerpt from the German magazine Spiegel on line “ Devil save the Queen: It used to be that the English military fought for God, the Queen and the Fatherland. Now, however, you can fight for the devil, too. The British navy officially recognized its first Satanist sailor and is going to allow him to perform Satanic rituals onboard British warships” . As English citizen would you like to tell us a comment on this ;)?

That sounds like a cool ship to be on ! sacrificing virgins –lets go

On the contrary, according to our mythology, the last gryphonmetal question is the infamous question of the Game!! For the bands we interview for the second time we promptly provide the Game of the Emptiness. I will suggest you a place, which is completely empty, and you should reveal to me which object or person you would put into this imaginary empty place at first. For you Rob, there is a completely empty… museum.

I will place myself in there ,sometimes its good to be alone

Thank you so much Rob !!!
