Combustion Inferno

"Is there much traffic in Zürich today?" i asked via sms Matthias Borer, frontman of Darkmoon. "As always" was his answer. Remembering the jam i found that day when Endstille played and the latest time i was in the Swiss city for the press screening of X-men First Class, i got already panic because i left home dangeroulsy late. Fortunately , reaching the city was quite smooth this time. Quite relaxing. But Borer words were prophetic anyway: the way back home, after the concert, has been again tortured by stop and go in queueing till highway entrance. As always. However the game was (again) worth the candle...

Vader and Krisiun together in this majestic Summer Campaign 2011 Tour touched Zürich in a show presented by "Meh Suff!" and set the well known Swiss venue Dynamo on fire . Awesome concert to say the least. Essence and Darkmoon provided for warm up, and from the moment Resistance didnt play, the running order was postponed fast one hour later, although all this didn't affect the door-opening time. It was a nice day , so most people remained outside to have some refreshing drink and to have a chat. When i came in the venue, Darkmoon was still engaged in the soundcheck. From the moment that the stage is long but not too wide only a drumkit will be on stage: the Vader one. Only cymbals will be changed band after band.

Darkmoon will release a new studio album under a new label in few weeks. The band was really busy in this production, therefore lately  concerts were quite sporadic for them. But this period of preparation for the upcoming cd (called "Wounds") is finally past. We will taste soon this new  work and hopefully again many concerts will be planned for this super band from Basel. I presume it was a great honour for Darkmoon to open here in Zürich for The Summer Campaign 2011. Darkmoon offered a very good show with the great, unmistakable vocals of frontman Matthias Borer. The way they play guitar: it is also unmistakable, a trade mark for the band, a kind of interweave which is amazing. The setlist brought to the audience beautiful melodies and groovy hardness. Melodic Death metal of finest sort. Once more i gladly took up the challenge to submerge in this sinister yet tuneful music. Indeed Darkmoon is second to none concerning composition. Pity that the sound was not as optimal as this music deserve and that metalheads, even if already very numerous, always remain far from the stage when the first bands play. Instead to overflow the stage as this music should deserve. Gianrichy Giamboi's solos were mighty, played on his hand made 8-strings guitar. Darkmoon opened strongly with My Misery (from latest album Apocalyptic Syndrome). But two bright new songs followed, which obviously will be part of the tracklist of upcoming "Wounds": Rise Up and The Sword (The Sword will be the opener of the new cd). Caravan Of The Dead is a motherf*cker earworm, from Apocalyptic Syndrome era, and, as such, was very appreciated by the crowd. It couldn't be otherwise: the extreme Swiss scene knows very good Darkmoon. And then the two hymnic Winds of Death and Dust In my Eyes took it all, because have become simply a classic for band and fans. And finally Black Domain as last song proposed...for those who know Darkmoon no further comment about this song is needed. Horns up, Darkmoon!

Danish Essence are a stable part in the bill of the Summer Campaign 2011 and brought on the stage much sympathy, but not only. Virtuosisms too, concerning instrumentation. Guitar solos and great basslines proved an incredible ability to master old school Thrash.  Fact is that Essence are all young guys that seem to possess already tons of experience, and indeed, although emerged in 2005 they have collected some live experience sharing the stage with big names, many of them Danish of course like Mercenary, Raunchy and Mnemic. But now, this is their first international tour. And they play so hard and easy going at the same time. Full of energy and enthusiasm, headbanging like hell and interactive with the crowd. I must say the sound was better than for Darkmoon, but vocals should have been louder and cymbals lower. Anyway it was a suprising great, self-confident, fresh performance with much implacable bass picking and guitar shredding. Among the songs presented  Pestilence, Arachnida, Blood Culture after a bass intro and Lost in Violence.

Vader and Krisiun: Their performances were detonation. The crowd enjoyed massively by organizing a wide moshing circle, some crowdsurfing and by headbanging a lot with suc a pleasure, as i didn't see since long time. Considering that we are in Switzerland and under the efficient Meh Suff! organization, everything has been anyway very correct and self-controlled. Moshpits and crowdsurfing were surrounded by rather thick rows  where people had the possibility to follow the concert in safe endurance. Vader and Krisiun are a powerhouse. The force of both bands on the stage has been immense even though in quite different style.

Brazilian Krisiun have been solid, brachial, bonecrushing, deadly and precise under the command of vocalist and bassist Alex Camargo with his quite classic 4 -string Dean Metalman ML bass. Krisiun was extremely appreciative of the crowd underling many times how much grateful the band is for the fans' support. it was extreme Death metal performed in the best blasting and brutal way possible. Krisiun opened with Combustion Inferno that was fantastic and actually the title and the attitude of this song can describe the whole concert. The inferno was unleashed also with the hunting Vengeance's Revelation sealed by its final lead guitar solo. The beautiful and rhythmed Dissident Abomination followed in the general acclamation. Hatred Inherit and Vicious Wrath were warmachines. With Vicious Wrath the crowd went nuts even more than before if to say so makes any sense. Sentenced Morning from the album Southern Storm was the gem, one of the best Death metal tracks ever. Again Alex Camargo thanked the fans and said that it was a honour to play in Switzerland. We should not forget that, during the concert,  Krisiun prepared the crowd for Vader too  "Are you ready for Vader?!". The last song was King of Killing. The crowd was mesmerized, the fans in the first rows couldn't wait to shake hands with their heroes. Krisiun: 3 brothers, one inferno.

The crowd chainted loud the name Vader when the stage was ready and the lights went off. A name which is a legend.I presume that the crowd seduced Vader along the concert and not only the opposite, as usual. The enthusiasm for the Polish Death Metal band around the charismatic guitarist and vocalist Piotr "Peter" Wiwczarek was outstanding and involved the band more and more. The athmosphere was a constant crescendo of support  and moshing with some crowdsurfing and stagediving. People stand there in a storm of headbanging since the first notes played. Everybody was grooving on the music, on Spider's guitar solos (great and generous guitarist by the way), on Peter's vocals, on the solid bass and on the eruptive drums. Vader opened straight to the point with This is The War and it was at once annihilation in aggressive style. The band tried to underline well all passages, pace changes and virtuosisms that enslave the listeners. Sothis from album "De Profundis" was another great experience. Indeed attending Sothis live at Dynamo, which isn't an enormous location, one could understand how precise the band plays and the care Vader puts on sound and on impact. After Sothis the crowd began to chant the name Vader again, a little technical problem of Peter's guitar was quickly solved and the band was ready to propel with brutal speed the song Devilizer on the "hungry" pit. Then another song off the album "Necropolis" was unchained: Rise Of The Undead, with a lot of accent on cymbals, more than in the studio version. And we went on with the beautiful suffering Shadow Fear, whose initial unmistakable loop was so well played together with  all related variations of the theme, guitar shredding and slow down included. Another moment of great interest was when Vader presented a song from the new album "Welcome To The Morbid Reich" and precisely Come And See My Sacrifice. The crowd was eager for more so Vader proposed Carnal and, after having presented his band members, Peter announced Dark Age from the very first album, playing it  compact  with freak touch. Practically in a kind of second encore Vader performed then the cover Black Sabbath (from the band Black Sabbath of course) and finally, in a triumph of sweat, lights, smoke and headbanging comes Raining Blood, cover of Slayer. And the band came back again on the stage to thank the fans and shake hands with them."...Now i shall reign in blood!"

The whole evening was a kind of "combustion Inferno". And the game is worth the candle. As always.
