A jewel of parodic metal.
Ultra Vomit is back with a new album entitled "Panzer Surprise!", a very suitable name. Nine years after the release of the excellent "Objectif : Thunes" which has not aged one bit, the band offers to take us on board their panzer for a completely wacky, top speed journey. Here’s the program: a trip to Germany, Japan, Quebec, a powerful return to childhood, a journey to a foul digital future and much more.
Right from the intro, "Entooned", the tone is set: a few notes from the famous Looney Tunes music play and here comes Ultra Vomit in full force. Beautifully produced by Fred Duquesne (Mass Hysteria, No One Is Innocent ...), the sound is perfect and transcends the 22 songs contained in this CD. Each track has its own atmosphere: heavy metal, grind core, metalcore, industrial metal, punk rock, hard rock…, and we can hear throughout the album the same great skills and meticulousness in the song-writing and the playing of the four-piece band.
Just like its leader Fetus (vocals, guitar) who has achieved an absolutely masterful vocal performance. His very wide vocal range allows him to sing any musical genre and he’s got a baffling ability to change his voice very easily and naturally. The work he’s managed to accomplish with maestria is highly precise, even in the intonations of his voice, the choruses and the accents. For he has not just sung or spoken in French. The powerful "Kammthaar" is performed mostly in German, the exotic "Takoyaki" is sung in Japanese, English lyrics can be heard on "Calojira" and "E-Tron (Digital Caca)", while the Quebec accent is present on the mythical "Super Sexe". Though he’s an exceptional singer, Fetus never displays self-indulgence, just like his bandmates.
Thus Flockos (lead guitar) can fully express his talent on this album thanks to brilliantly performed chiselled solos, or guitar parts full of feeling that marvellously complement those done by Fetus, like the sumptuous instrumental track "Batman vs Predator", or anthems like "Un Chien Géant" or "Evier Metal". The band’s punk member delights us with his elegant, powerful and refined playing style. As usual, the guys bring great care to their riffs, incisive and ultra-powerful, and to their catchy melodies that will remain in your brain.
To support the two guitar players, a solid rhythm section was needed. Manard (drums and shitty voice, sic) is there with his mighty and clear drumming, his resounding blasts and thundering double kick play as we can hear for instance on the hilarious "Anthracte". One of the features of this band is the self-deprecating humour, and this time Manard grabs the mic to entertain us with two completely crazy and funny songs called "Le Train Fantôme" and the tasty "Keken". Though he has a peculiar voice, the (falsely) gruff guy is nevertheless a good singer.
And what about the bass guitar? Too far in the background on the previous album, this time around it is present. Ultra Vomit’s umpteenth bass player, the young Matthieu Bausson, gives freshness and a diversified playing style that perfectly suits the band. Flawless and strong throughout the 22 tracks, Matt makes his instrument resounding and even brings a groovy and pleasant sound (see "Anthracte"). Crazy songs like "Jésus" or "Pipi vs Caca" or the beautifully dark "Batman vs Predator" already mentioned, show us the extent of his skills. Let’s hope he stays in the band for a long time.
There is so much to say about this "Panzer Surprise !". The CD itself is a beautiful and fun object, made by the talented Nicolas Leroy. By the way you can have fun and try to guess the bands Ultra Vomit parodied thanks to the logos. More elaborate, more sophisticated and accomplished than its predecessor "Objectif : Thunes", a jewel of parodic metal though, Ultra Vomit has achieved a genuine tour de force with this new album.
From a mix of genres that are theoretically unlikely, even absurd, this brilliant and atypical band has managed to make them coherent and obvious, thanks to their subtle understanding of music, their eclecticism, their great sense of humour and their craziness. "Panzer Surprise !" is a complete success that deserves much more than just a positive review: go get it and listen to it over and over again.
And for those of you who would have doubts, rest assured: this band on stage is monster and hilarious.

Un bijou de metal parodique.
Ultra Vomit revient avec un nouvel album intitulé « Panzer Surprise ! » qui porte son nom à merveille. Neuf ans après la sortie de l’excellent « Objectif : Thunes » qui n’a absolument pas vieilli, le groupe nous propose d’embarquer à bord de leur panzer pour un voyage complètement loufoque et à pleine vitesse. Au programme : une excursion en Allemagne, au Japon, au Québec, un retour en enfance tout en puissance, un voyage vers un futur digital nauséabond et bien d’autres choses encore.
Dès l’intro, « Entooned », le ton est donné : quelques secondes du célèbre générique des Looney Tunes et voici qu’Ultra Vomit déboule en force. Magnifiquement produit par Fred Duquesne (Mass Hysteria, No One Is Innocent…), le son est impeccable et sublime les 22 morceaux contenus dans ce CD. Chacun d’eux a sa propre ambiance : heavy metal, grind core, metalcore, metal industriel, punk rock, hard rock…, et l’on retrouve tout au long de l’album la même maîtrise et la même minutie dans la composition et l’interprétation de chaque titre.
A l’image de son leader Fetus (chant, guitare) qui réalise une performance vocale absolument magistrale. Possédant une tessiture très étendue, capable de chanter dans n’importe quel registre et de changer de voix avec une facilité et un naturel déconcertants, le travail qu’il a accompli avec maestria est d’une grande précision et ce jusque dans les intonations de voix, les chœurs ou les accents. Car il ne s’est pas contenté de chanter ou de parler en français. Le puissant « Kammthaar » est largement interprété en allemand, l’exotique « Takoyaki » est chanté en japonais, l’anglais est présent sur « Calojira » et « E-Tron (Digital Caca)», et l’accent québécois est au rendez-vous du mythique « Super Sexe ». Impérial au chant, Fetus ne tombe cependant jamais dans la démonstration à l’instar de ses compagnons de route.
Ainsi Flockos (guitare lead) exprime plus amplement son talent sur cet album grâce à des soli ciselés, exécutés avec brio ou des parties de guitare très bien senties qui se complètent à merveille avec celles de Fetus comme sur le somptueux instrumental « Batman vs Predator », ou des hymnes tels que « Un Chien Géant » ou « Evier Metal ». Le punk de la bande nous délecte de son jeu élégant, tout en puissance et finesse pour notre plus grand plaisir. Comme toujours avec Ultra Vomit, un grand soin est apporté aux riffs, incisifs et surpuissants, et aux mélodies accrocheuses qui restent bien ancrées dans le cerveau.
Pour soutenir les deux six-cordistes, il était indispensable qu’une solide section rythmique leur réponde. Et c’est chose faite avec Manard (batterie et voix de merde, sic) qui nous réjouit les oreilles de son jeu puissant et clair, de ses blasts retentissants et de son vrombissant jeu à la double comme par exemple sur l’hilarant « Anthracte ». L’humour et l’autodérision étant des caractéristiques d’Ultra Vomit, Manard passe derrière le micro pour deux titres complètement fous et drôles, « Le Train Fantôme » et le savoureux « Keken ». Chanteur à la voix particulière, (faussement) bourru, il n’en est pas moins un très bon interprète.
Et la basse dans tout ça ? Trop en retrait sur le précédent album, cette fois elle est bien présente. L’énième bassiste d’Ultra Vomit, le jeune Matthieu Bausson, offre de la fraîcheur et un style de jeu diversifié qui convient à la perfection au groupe. Impeccable et robuste tout au long des 22 titres, il fait résonner sa basse avec force et apporte même un son groovy très plaisant (cf. « Anthracte »). Des chansons aussi délirantes que « Jésus » ou « Pipi vs Caca » ou bien le magnifiquement sombre « Batman vs Predator » déjà cité nous montrent l’étendue de son style de jeu. Espérons qu’il restera longtemps dans Ultra Vomit.
Il y a énormément à dire sur ce « Panzer Surprise ! ». Le CD lui-même est un bel objet, ludique, créé par le talentueux Nicolas Leroy. Vous pourrez d’ailleurs vous amuser à identifier par les logos quels groupes ont été parodiés. Plus élaboré, sophistiqué et abouti que son prédécesseur « Objectif : Thunes », qui pourtant est un bijou de metal parodique, Ultra Vomit a réussi un véritable tour de force avec ce nouvel album.
Des mélanges de genres en théorie improbables et même aberrants, ce groupe génial et atypique a su les rendre cohérents voire évidents, grâce à leur compréhension subtile de la musique, leur éclectisme, leur grand sens de l’humour et leur folie. « Panzer Surprise ! » est une réussite totale qui mérite largement plus qu’une simple chronique positive : que l’on se procure ce bel album et qu’on l’écoute encore et encore.
Et que ceux qui en douteraient se rassurent : sur scène Ultra Vomit est tout simplement monstrueux et drôle.
