I THINK IT'S SOME KIND OF RACISM IF YOU DO MUSIC FOR JUST ONE KIND OF PEOPLE

Dalia: So, first question to Mika, singer of Entwine. Which are your impressions about this Summer Breeze festival and are you satisfied with your performance?

Mika: Yeah, it's been very good weather here today and everything was fine in here. The audience was very good, but i think there was less people because it is Thursday but it was very good, .... it was a very good experience for me and i had a great time on stage.

Dalia: An historical question, so coming back to 1995 the band was quiet young and was playing death metal, you were not in the lineup of the band that time, but since then to now the band has followed an evolution from Death to Gothic.

Mika: This is the thing everybody is asking, but Entwine has never been Death metal, it was Aksu our drummer and Tom our guitarist they started to play Death metal and it was total different band in that time. and after that they wanted to go a little bit softer and Entwine was born after that, but Entwine never made Death metal.

Dalia: So there is not a clear evolution from Death metal to Goth.....

Mika: No, not with Entwine, ..... not with Entwine...

Dalia: You are writing also the lyrics...

Mika: Almost everything but a couple of songs i had done with our producer Anssi Kippo and a couple of songs with Tom ...... about the lyrics, what you want to know?....

Dalia: I would propose this question, don't you think that the Gothic symbology needs a kind of innovation, i mean , there are some parameters which are peculiar, typical to goth metal like tears, pain, lies, cold, fire....

Mika: .. continue so i understand your question... (laughing)
.. well, i dont see us like a pure goth metal band, i think we are a little bit more Goth rock and a little bit metal from somewhere else.... i dont know what Goth is because there are a lot of different kind of bands in the Goth scene, seen in a long way there is The Cure, Type O' Negative and they are totally different bands..... gothic metal and gothic pop and stuff like that, you know,...i dont know if i gave you an answer to your question... i'm not sure.

Dalia: Your last album , Time of Despair, is quiet successful but has divided the critics, some consider it a good work and some other would have preferred something else or they are saying Gone was better

Mika: That is maybe because the Gone album was a little bit easier to go in, ... was more kind of sing along stuff, more easy stuff, but we get up ... in the new album we like to do something more... kind of more spacy stuff, and i think that its a ... how can i put it... we want to have something new and different feelings in that, and there is some more different kind of moods in the Time of Despair album if i compare it to the Gone album.
It is filled with different kind of feelings... that's what i think...

Dalia: Always speaking about Time of Despair, many consider that the song Tonight is maybe your best song.....

Mika: ... and thats only in limited edition......

Dalia: ....right!

Mika: ... that was , because we was in studio too long time and we had some kind of misunderstanding with the label... they want it to have The Pit and they want to have one song away from the album... i dont know why, but they want to do that and we were kind of pissed off and at that time we were thinking that it would be the second single song.....
we had a couple of gigs before .... and we didnt played it here, Tonight, .... we love that song.....
we didnt had too much time, and people dont know that we have a limited edition ........

Dalia: ..i was sorry that 'Tonight' wasn't presented....

Mika: ... me too...

Dalia: .. or 'Tears are falling', its a cover but well done in my opinion... but not only my opinion...
How does it usually take shape an Entwine song .... comes the melody first or the lyrics, or grows both together?

Mika: The way that i do it is, that we go to the rehearsal room, and the guys have something they've done at home and than i start to sing with words without sense, just some strange sounds...and in that way the melody is created, and after that i put it on tape to hear the melodies and  than i start to write, ... i want to have the feeling first...
because the melody is the line up for everything, ... the melody is the thing, i dont remember who sayed that , but he was right in this consideration.....,
it doesn't matter what you sing, it's important how you sing it.

Dalia: Who is the typical Entwine fan?

Mika: Bad question,... i dont know, because there is so lot of different people....
there are Black guys with spikes and stuff like that, there are young girls, there are older girls, there are many old people, ... you know... something like 45-50 years old, and they say ' ok guys, you have some good songs'..., ..... we are not a teenagers band.... some of the Finnish press told,' this is just a teenager music' but people decide, and that's the thing i alway want to do,....... reach.... to reach with our music many kind of people because i think it's some kind of racism if you do music for just one kind of people..... if you know what i mean..

Dalia: Yeah!.... In your lineup there is a woman, which is playing the keyboards.....

Mika: ... Ritta!....

Dalia: ... Ritta!...

Mika: ...Ritta, with 2 Ts....

Dalia: yeah!....I mean its nothing exceptional, but there are still just a few woman in the "rock musical" scene, what do you think about her female role.....

Mika: It's very good to have her with us, because she's a very good person, and she do her job very well, and when she's on stage she's banging as us.. and maybe more  i think,..... i dont know.... she's one of the guys anyways.......

Dalia: There is a person who works with us for our webzine and unfortunately he couldn't come here......

Mika:... he's the guy... (laughing and looking at the mobile  where is just arrived a sms)

Dalia: yeah... he's the guy....which is a megafan of Entwine.....

Mika: ... cool, i send you my greetings......

Dalia: in particular of Ritta.... (laughing)
so this question is dedicated to Salvo...

Mika: (laughing)..

Dalia: from the moment ,Salvo is in Italy, next question is, have you an idea when you will play in Italy?

Mika: I wish i'd' knew, because ... i dont know... maybe sometime in the future, because there are a lot of people visiting our website from Italy and they want to see us live, and we will be there as soon as it is possible.....

Dalia: ..thats cool....

Mika: ... thats what i can promise.....

Dalia: thank you from Italy! .... so, which are the projects for the future?

Mika: Tomorrow morning we go to leave at 06:00 from here and go to Rostock.. pretty long journey... to get the ferryboat back to Finland, and on Saturday we play a festival there and next week we're starting touring in Finland and after the tour maybe we have a short vacation.... i dont know... maybe the next album i think comes out in next autumn, because we want to have ready a lot of material and everything has to be ready and so i think we have to be there for too long time.

Dalia: when you are playing live, which is the song you like the most to play?

Mika: It depends, it depends, but i think Time of Despair, because it's the closest one for me, ... i don't know why..., it is the one i get so... wasted with that... but it depends of the situation... if 'you' like to rock maybe Snow White Suicide.. or if 'you' need some faster songs maybe The Pit .... it depends...

Dalia: ... it depends... it depends from the audience too.....

Mika: Yeah, but i think it has to do with us... , because if the audience is in, everything is good, but if the audience is there like some death person, all quiet, just watching you , ..... bored.... , you have to make a wall... you cant get to know the people, so i mean.... you can feel that......

Dalia: As last question i propose you our usual and typical gryphonmetal last question.....
i call this question 'The Game of the Tower' ,..... so for you Mika, there is a very high tower, and on the tower three bands are waiting for you and you have to push down two of them to let them fall, saving the third one. For you the three bands are: Metallica, Guns N' Roses and Judas Priest....

Mika: Metallica and Judas Priest will go down!
I'm a very big Guns N' Roses Fan,.... that was very very easy for me (laughing)

Dalia: Ahhhhhhhhh! eh ok!      Thank you a lot Mika!
